Description
THE MCVAYS HAD outgrown their tiny city apartment--Teddy was too big for his crib, Jeremy and Julie fought constantly, Kate's antidepressant wasn't doing the job and Bill had always dreamed of owning land--so they bought a house in the country. They moved in on the first of August and spent most of that magical month outside, working in the yard, hiking in the woods and swimming in the spring-fed pond. Jeremy, who was ten, raced around on his new mountain bike like a squirrel let out of his cage, and his six-year-old sister Julie, after riding a pony at the county fair, acquired an imaginary horse that she stabled in the stone foundation of a barn that had long ago fallen down. Bill and Kate took turns playing with Teddy while the other cut down the dense patches of brambles and vines that had grown up around the house; they were both eager to make the place look picturesque, like they imagined it had in the old days. After the kids went to bed, Bill and Kate sat outside with a glass of wine, listened to creatures call out in the night and felt as if they'd wandered, unwittingly, into a storybook life. It wasn't until a Saturday morning in early November, when Bill was cleaning the clogged gutters above Julie's room, that they discovered the gingerbread. Bill was a city boy, inexperienced in climbing ladders and fixing things, so Kate kept an eye on him from the yard where she raked leaves into a pile for the kids to jump in. She watched as Bill dug into the crud with his bare hands and whistled his indecipherable melodies. The yellow fingers of the plastic gloves she had given him flapped about forgotten in his jacket pocket like a freak vestigial wing.
